Morgenster – A Farm with History                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Morgenster is truly one of the historical gems of South Africa. Established 300 years ago, this beautiful farm has attracted people with its beautiful surroundings, ideal terrior, and the magnificent Manor House for ages.

When Giulio Bertrand first laid eyes on Morgenster in 1992, it was love at first sight. He was looking for a house in the Cape Dutch style, that he could purchase as his retirement home. He had been born and raised in Biella in Italy, where he was involved in the textile industry with his family. After settling on Morgenster, Mr Bertrand started thinking about farming. After some research he realized that the farm had the potential to produce excellent wines and olives. Although part of Italian culture is production of fine wines and olives together, it was not practised here in South Africa as yet.He set out to realize this dream, and built a relationship with the Olive Oil Research Institute of Italy, from where he imports the most up to date olive tree cultivars and production technology.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                The trees are propogated in the Morgenster nursery, and also sold to other farms. He has done much to advance the local olive industry. Morgenster's Extra Virgin Olive oil was judged “Best Blended Olive Oil in the world” by L'Extravergine 2006, and the Morgenster mill was awarded “Mill of the year” L'Extravergine 2007. The Extra Virgin Olive Oils produced on Morgenster is blended together from nearly 20 varietals of olives, and each year's production is unique. The oil is cold pressed, and completely natural, with no additives or preservatives, and neither filtered nor refined.

Their Extra Virgin Olive Oil has received 97 points out of 100 for the third year running in the Flos Olei guide. This made them the only Extra Virgin Olive Oil from South Africa to receive this rating. They have also received a Gold medal in the SA Olive Awards, a Silver medal at the Los Angeles Country Fair, and Prestige Gold medal at the TerraOlivo in Israel.

The Estate exports their wines and olive products to all parts of the world.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   On the farm you can enjoy wine and olive tasting in their lovely tasting room, with a view over the Helderberg Mountains. When you visit the Helderberg area again, be sure to come experience this wonderful Estate, taste their products, and maybe have lunch in the fantastic restaurant. This is truly amazing place, and when you are here, you can understand why Willem Adriaan van der Stel was so captivated by the place 300 years ago.
